SUSPECTED INCENDIARISM.
(per press association) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 5
There was an alarm of fire last night, which proved to be in one of the rooms of a house at Devon port. The fire was quickly extinguished. On examination this morning the paper of the room was found to be saturated with kerosene, and as the furniture in the house was insured, together with other suspicious circumstances of the case connected with the fire, J. G. Daniels, the tenant, was arrested on a charge of incendiarism. THE INVESTIGATION. NEW PLYMOUTH, This day. M. *S Daniells was charged this morning, at the Police Court, with setting fire to his house on Wednesday night, at Devonport. It was stated that some furniture had been removed, and the police wished to find where it was, as a larger quantity had been insured than was found in the house when the fire was extinguished. Mr Pardy asked the Bench not to grant accused bail, as it might frustrate the police in getting the property were he at liberty. Bail was refused.
