A TERRIFIC GALE.
TWO MEN LOST OVERBOARD(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, this day. The barquentine Malay, bound from Newcastle, N.S. W., for Honolulu, with 1100 tons coal aboard, put in here yesterday afternoon in a leaking condition. Capt. Peterson reports :—Left Newcastle; 21st February and on 18th March when the vessel was latitude 33.15 S. longitude 175.13 W. it began torblow from the S. E. and the gale quickly; in \ creased to a .fierce hurricane. The vessel was then under balanced reefed : mainsail, lower topsail and foretopsai ; staysail. .At half-past three -mini the vessel was struck on ’the starboard bow. by a heavy sea, which carried away the: boats, forward house, and everything on debk. The same sea took the second mate and one of the men overboard, and they were never seen again. The cabin and every state room were were flooded. The cargo shifted Jo the port side,; and the vessel was on her beam ends. The vessel also was found! to be making water, and men were in couseqvence lashed to the pump for. seven hours. The gale abating, the; barque managed to make Auckland. ; : I
