A CONSTABLE DROWNED AT WHITE CLIFFS.
(per press association) NEW PLYMOUTH, March 31. John Rigby, constable in the A.C. Force, left the White Cliff camp yester-; dav morning to assist Mr Joshua Jones and party with their horses round the point on the beach on their way tq Mokau. On nearing tha tunnel Rigby
of the horses? and led the other two. The horse he was riding became restive while swimming, and he was not seen after rounding the point. It is supposed that he was washed off by a wave and drowned. Captain Messenger went with a boat’s crew at once' to the spot, and the men dived,* but without result. In the evening grappling irons were obtained, and the body was recovered- in about eight feet of water, close to the cliff.
the: inquest. / ' NEW ; PLYMOUTH, This day, An inquest was held on Saturday at Urenui on the body of John Rigby. The jury, fbundfl verdict that deceased was accidentally drowned white trying to swim horses round the point at Paraninihi,” and added the following rider, “ the jury would call the attention of the Government to the fact of there being no road beyond the camp at White Cliffs, and that travellers to Mokah are subjected to a great risk of life by having to go round such a dangerous point on the sea beach.”
