(per press association.) AUCKLAND, March 11. A man named Inkster, while intoxicated this morning, threw a piece of bone meat or a knife at his wife’s head, striking her. She became unconscious, and went into fit, and was removed to the Hospital, The doctor believes that the brain is injured. At the anniversary of the Fountain of Friendship Lodge, M.U., it was stated that the lodges in the Auckland district were prosperous last half-year. T1 ere are 16 lodges, with 1129 members The sick and funeral fund showed £19,401, the management fund of the Lodges having to its credit a balance of £493. Coal is stated to have been discovered over 600 acres at Cabbage Bay. A scries of valuable exhibits have been received by the Auckland Museum from Professor Ward, of Rochester, New York. WELLINGTON, March 11. The stamp revenue for . the eleven months amounts to £401,393. Arrangements for Major Atkinson’s tour through the South Island have been slightly altered. It is now probable that he speaks at Christchurch first, on Monday the 12th iust. He will then proceed then to the Lake district, returning thence to Dunedin. Some specimens which were taken out of the Golden' Crown claim have been reported on as follows by Mr W. Skey, of the Geological Department: “ Two large pieces, weighing nearly 2|dbs, taken from one part of the reef. Those pieces were coarsely broken, and the fragments were mixed, and from the resulting heap a sample was taken for almalgamation. This sample yielded gold at the rate of S4oz 3dwt 12gr to the ton. The gold is of the same quality as that hilhorto found in the reefs of the district, being worth about £3 per ounce. The gold will bo assayed at once, and the result communicated. I should state that there was but very little gold visible upon the pieces as sent, but a great deal showed when they were crushed.”
