THE TRIP TO KAWHIA.

On Saturday evening two parties of lexenrsionists set ouVfor Kawhia, one by The Rowcna, from New Plymouth, and ; the 1 other byThe Hannah 5 Mokau, from ! Waitara. The steamers ; left their respective ports of departure at 8 p.m. and ■midnight, and reached Kawhia, the former at 7 a.m., and the latter at 10 •a.iri., on' Sunday morning. The weather ■was beautifully fine, and the trip most ■ enjoyable. Arrived at Kawhia, the excursionists landed. Most stayed ; about the township, but a few travelled a few miles inland, to-see something of i the; country, which they describe as being very good. The township is not a very • inviting looking spot, being very hilly, and affording little good building room. ■As the demand for building, sites in- : creases, recourse must be had to reclamation. The harbour, as is pretty,gener- ; ally known, is exceedingly ? picturesque, iand what is of infinitely more importance very safe. It is a splendid haven'of refuge, the entrance being good, and ( arrived inside vessels are in perfect security. The Maoris were very friendly :und respectful. They brought melons land other products, as presents, and tigged themselves out in their best clothes before venturing into the cabins •of the vessels. The excursionists reembarked about 5 o’clock, and arrived in time to catch Monday morning’s train. ; The Star says that about 70 passengers accompanied the two steamers, and that another trip will be arranged shortly when thes.s. Macgregor will be laid on.
