PATEA RIFLES.
A special general meeting of members of the Patea Rifles was held last Tuesday evening, after parade. There were present Captain Taplin, in the chair, and the whole of the corps, with the exception of an officer and two volunteers. Sergeant Kearney was re-elected Secretary and Treasurer. The following nominations for Committeemen were received : Messrs Kells, Kendall, Hyains, Carey, Inirie, Nutsford, and Harris. The first three were elected, the voting being in the order given. It was decided by the rule of the meeting by fifteen ayes to ten noes, “ That the mark appertaining to shooting matches, &c., be done by the general Committee.” Resolved on the motion of Corporal Hyams, seconded by Vol Bartlett, “ That this corps considers it highly necessary that a permanent drill instructor be appointed to the corps.” This resolution was passed in answer to extracts, read from,Major,Stapp’s letter by the Captain, in reference to drill, &c. Two inspection parades •were fixed to be held Tuesday being the night fixed. On the motion of Band-Sergeant Kendall, seconded by Bandsman Howe, it was. resolved that (he band parade with Volunteers as Volunteers on all occasions, and that the night of brand practice bo altered. Several members of the Band asked for information as to their position regarding (he Band, and were informed by'the Captain that five bandsmen would be allowed the corps, and that all the others must parade with the corps until they at least become efficient soldiers, then Major Stapp would be prepared to see what could be done to keep up the strength of the Band. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
