WAVERLEY.

(from our own correspondent.) Honda}'. The public meeting, called for Saturday last, for the purpose of considering the advisableness of suspending the Counties Act, did not come off, only about a dozen ratepayers putting in an appearance. After the amount of growling that has been heard for such a long time at County' management, it seems surprising that so little interest is taken in the matter. In a month or two another double rate will' come due,, payable' to both County and Road Board, when, no doubt, : both these bodies will boduly anathematised as usual by the too much governed ratepayer, who will in a measure, however, have only himself to thank for the heavy taxation. “If you want a thing done, do it yourself ” is an excellent motto and applies in this case,; for if the taxpayer will not exert himself to shake off the yoke he bears nobody, will do it for him. i

Another case of theft occurred on Saturda} - night or early on Sunday morning, this time the article taken being a leg of pork, which disappeared mysteriously from the safe in which it was deposited in the Commercial Hotel. There is no trace of the thief however, who, doubtless has, ere this, satisfactorily disposed of his plunder. Our townsman, Mr Koertz, who injured himself some few weeks back by a fall from the top of a house which he was building, landing on the bare scantling below, has not yet recovered from the effects of the accident, being still very shaky. No bones were broken, however, and a week or two’s rest will no doubt restore him to his usual health.

"Mr F. K. Jackson’s sale on Friday passed off very quietly, buyers being very scarce and prices low.
