WAVERLEY.

(prom our own correspondent.) Feb. 9. The sale of cattle, furniture, and effects, &c., in the late Mr Coghill’s estate took place this day ; Mr A. Barns, agent for the Public Trustee, conducting the sale. There was a very fair attendance of buyers, and prices on the whole were satisfactory. At the special meeting of the School Committee held on Monday last for the purpose of considering applications for the office of master to the Waverley school, vacant through the resignation of Mr Scott, after considerable discussion, Mr Harris, the present master of the Halcotnbe school was nominated. There were as many as nine applications lor the post A public meeting is called for Saturday, the 10th inst., in the Town Hall, for the purpose of ventilating the question of local self government, and taking an opinion on the advisableness or otherwise of suspending the Counties Act within the Patea County. Meetings have been already held up the country on the same subject, the general opinion seeming to favour the hanging up of the Act, A question of so much importance will, no doubt, attract a, large number of ratepayers to the meeting. All seem to agree that either the Road Board should be done away with and a separate County formed for the Waverley district, or that steps bo taken to suspend the Act and let the Town Board and Road Board have the full management of affairs. Complaints are heard on all sides at the double rate payable to these bodies. Ratepayers should therefore make it their business to “ roll up ” to the meeting in force.
