ENGLISH MARKETS.

The N.Z.L. and M. A. Co.’s circular of Dec. rcl'eis to the wool sales of that month: Wi'h a good attendance of buyers this selection was mainly disposed of at rates closely approaching those of the previous series. Compelion, however, was marked by considerable irregularity, principally, in the case of coarse cross-breds and inferior merinos in pour condiiio i, which showed a downward tendency. Su' sequent auctions have enabled us to form a more definite idea of the position of the market, and, although some fluctuations have taken place during the last few days, wo consider that with the exception of coarse cross-breds, inferior merinos, and faulty scoured lots, which latter are in large supply, the scale of values- now ruling is not appreciably below that of the opening day. They tire still, however, not less than to Id per lb below the closing rates of September, and having regard to the considerable stocks which are known to be held by dealers and staplers, and to the financial pressure exerted at various centres of consumption both at home and abroad, we do not look with confidence to an early improvement. Fine wools, whether cross-bred or merino, are selling freely, the former exhibiting an occasional advance whenever any-particularly choice parcel comes forward. Frozen Meats.— The consignment per Cuzco (s) repoited in our last issue as being due to arrive is now in course of realisation. The quantity already disposed of has not transpired, but we believe that prices have touched fid per lb for the best descriptions although considerably lower rates have been accepted for the less desirable sheep. Many of the carcases are of small size, in this respect much resembling those ex Chimborazo (s) referred to in our Circular No. 205, and being consequently not so suitable to the requirements of the English trade as those of a larger size. We qnotc the Home-fed meats today as follows : Good English and Scotch beef (bodies)... 3s lOd, to 5s 4d perSlbs Good English and Scotch mutton (carcases) ... ss, to 6s 6d do.
