A BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
TO THE EDITOR. I was very pleased to see two gentlemen canvassing the town the .other day for subscriptions in aid of a very deserving case (Mrs Broughton’s). It shows that, although times are bad, and money scarce, the people of Patea are a very liberal and feeling class of people. I am sure Messrs Nutsford and O’Dea are deserving of the thanks of the community for their kindness in getting together such a handsome sum of money in so short a time. I would further suggest that the ladies of this town form a Benevolent Society, as from cases that have come under ray notice some time ago, I must say that they have always proved themselves perfect Sisters of Mercy. I should like to know, Mr Editor, if 1 am right in saying .that I think Government will supplement their funds £ for £, If so, they will have no difficulty in making a a start. I would further suggest that they communicate with the Secretary ot the Benevolent Society in Wanganui, who will give them all the information required for the formation.—Yours &c.* James Lett. Jan. 11.
