o (Per s.s. City of Sydney, at Auckland.) HV TEIjEORAPH . LONDON, Dec. 18. Thoives robbed the cathedral of St. Denis, Paris,- of valuables to the amount of ten thousand francs. The Albei't mills, at Dewsbury, were burned doown on Nov. 25th. The loss amounted to £30,000. The London and North Western Car Factory at Wolverton was also burned on the same day ; total loss £IO,OOO. Siberiakoff, a Russian millionaire and patron of the Artie explorer Nofdenskjold, has failed. His liabilites amount to several millions of roubles. The Russian Minister of the Interior has authorised the publication of an English paper in St. Petersburg. Stanford Court, Worcestershire, the estate of Sir Francis Wannington, was burned, together with some valuable pictures and manuscripts, on the night of December Glh. The Royal Alhambra Theatre, London, has ' been burned down. The audience had just retired. Within half an hour from the commencement of the fire the dome fell. Neighboring houses were gutted, and the whole equipment of the theatre was destroyed. It was uninsured. The Emperor and Empress of Russia drove through the streets of St. Petersburg on Sunday, Nov. 18th, in an open sleigh. The people cheered enthusiastically, but extraordinary precautions for their safety were nevertheless taken. On November 28th the Rhine at Mayonce reached the highest point recorded in the present century, and at Bonne, the lower stories of the houses were submerged. At Coblenz the water forced its way from all sides into the gardens und into the Imperial palace. The town Council of May cnee voted a sum for the relief of sufferers in flooded districts. Cologne and Rouen . also suffererd, as well as Dusseldorf. The forts at the place first named were emptied of stores and ammunition.
The military tribunal at Odessa found Colonel fStaoraky guilty of embezzling 1,125,000 roubles, and sentenced him to banishment. The Prefect has ordered the police to. expel all Jews residing within 8t Petersburg without official permission. The Senate has also decided tint Jews arc incapable of holding office in Hussia. Lomavoli, a well known hanker, was muulered and robbed in a well frequented street in Bucharest. The eldest son of the late king of Bnrmnh has escaped from Benares, and is believed to he m route to upper Burma!) to raise a rebellion. In decorating the troops in Windsor Park, the Queen said ; “ I have called upon you to-day to express my best thanks for the gallantry and devotion you displayed in the short but decisive struggle in Egypt, and to say how proud 1 am of my soldiers and sailors, who have added fresh laurels to those already obtained in pievious campaigns, and of their devotion to their Queen and country.” When the Queen finished conferring the decorations she presented a medal to Baron Hogennn of the German ministry and an attache of the British in Egypt.
