THE AUCKLAND TRAGEDY.

[per press association.] AUCKLAND, This day. The case of alleged murder against Priestley and Mrs Hamilton commenced at the Police Court to-day. Messrs Earle and Cooper defended, and Mr Williamson, Crown Prosecutor, prosecuted. Strong comments were made by the prisoners’ counsel re the newspapers commenting on the case. There are over forty witnesses to be examined. The only evidence of importance that has yet transpired is that of Dr Goldsboro, who made the’ i)ost mortem. He deposed that the wound on Hamilton’s head corresponded exactly with the axe Mrs Hamilton was seen carrying the morning after Hamilton’s death. He also deposed that the wound could not have been caused by a fall on a bedstead, as asserted by Mrs Hamilton.
