CRICKET.
ENGLAND V. AUSTRALIA. In the match between the Hon. Ivo Bligh’s team and the Australian team, which has now been played in Melbourne, the Englishmen have got much the worst ot it. The Colonials, in Their first innings, scored 291, and the visitors 177. They followed on, and, at the close of the second day’s play (Jan. 1), had made 11 without the loss of a wicket. Yesterday it was raining, and play was stopped in consequence. The innings ultimately closed for 169, and the Australians requiring 56 runs to win the match, then commenced their second innings. Massie went in first, and was caught and bowled for nil. Murdoch scored 33, and Bannerman 25, both not out. Ihc Australians thus won the match by nine wickets. The attendance at the match was enormous, over 20,000 being present, and the’ greatest interest being taken in the contest. Intense excitement prevailed towards the close of the game. The Australian howling was extremely good, and dead on the wicket. The ground was in much belter order than yesterday. The return match will be played hero on the 19th instant.
