(pee pkess association) ’ THAMES, Doc. 29. A young man named John Davis lies in the hospital suffering from concussion of the brain, consequent upon a fall from his horse. He is not expected to live. He is the son of the late Rev. Mr Davis, Baptist, minister. GISBORNE, Dec. 29. Hugh McEwan, a shepherd and drover well-known in Napier and Wairoa, was found dead in a chair last night at the Sir George Grey, at Waorengaaliika, He must have been dead some lime when discovered. He had been drinking heavily. ' CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 29. Re-assuring accounts are. to hand from the country districts regarding the crops. Contrary to expectation little damage has been done beyond what a few days of warm weather will recover. In the north, however, the linseed crops have suffered heavily, and appearances arc at present against them. OAMARU, Dec. 29. A committee lias been formed hero for the purpose of endeavouring to arrange with Sir Julius Yogel the best means of securing the construction of a lino of railway up the Hindis Valley into the interior. The line would open up a large area of agricultural country at present in possession of the Crown. A tender for the erection of the necessary buildings for the Woollen Factory Company has been accepted. DUNEDIN, Dec. 28. The Harbour Board to-day decided, on the motion of Mr Fish, to send Home to Sir John Coode for approval the plans of their now engineer, Mr Barr —for bar improvements ; and, in the meantime, not to proceed with them.
