Of the 91,819 applications to the Irish Land Commission to fix fair rents from September 1 ? 1881, the date of the commencement of the Land Law Act, to July 31,1882, 26,309, have already been disposed of, so that at the present rate of progress it will require about 27 months more to finish the list. New South Wales is going in strongly for immigration. The Duchess of Argyle was to sail on the 16th November with Mi emigrants, and the Eoslin Castle was to follow this month with about 360. A little time ago the Nelson consignees of some boots, imported from England, found on opening the cases that some of-the contents had been abstracted, and the weight made up with bricks and rubbish. The Hawhe's Bay Herald says a Napier firm, Messrs Davidson, Irvine and Co, have had a similarly vexatious experience. They received from England a consignment of goods, including a large case of ready-made clothing. The entries at the Customs were duly passed, and the duty paid. But when the box was opened it was found that some one had abstracted the whole of the-clothing, and filled the box with dirty rags, gunny-bags, and general rubbish. Whether this was done at the London docks or. on board the vessel will probably never be discovered. At a labourer’s meeting held recently at Heytesbury, Wiltshire, England, _ it_ was stated that the average wages paid in that district were 10s pes week. It is certainly difficult to understand how a man can live and support a family on such paltry pay, but. considering the agricultural depression which has so long existed in Wiltshire, there seems no prospect of any amendment especially as there is never any want of men,—“ Truth.”
