(per press association,) NELSON, Oct. 17. The steamer Stonnbird put in here this evening. She left Wanganui on Saturday night with 20 head of cattle and 100 sheep and some lambs for Greymouth. The Manawatu left at the same time for Wesport. The Stormbird met with terrible weather aross the straits, and took shelter under Eangitoto Island but later on Sunday went into Port Hardy, but saw no sign of any vessel there. On Monday she ran for Totaranui,and on her way saw the Manawatu running apparently for Guards Bank. The Stormbird then geting short of coal, and having lost about 40 sheep, came on here.
