A young salmon, measuring about seven inches in length, was captured recently in the Wairoa river, near the ferry. Mr Fred Godfrey, late bandmaster of the celebrated Coldstream Guards, died in August, News has just been received in Christchurch of Colonel Packe’s death. He has been ailing for a long time, and his death has several times been reported before its occurence. A Reuter’s telegram dated Sydney October 16lh says:—The Hon. S. C. Brown, late Postmaster General, was seized with apoplexy while practising at an insolvency court this afternoon, and expired within an hour. He was 53 years of age. At the meeting at Fordell the other night one of the gentlemen present stated that he had succeeded in grafting potatoes. The method, as described by him, was to nib off all the sprouts of good sound potatoes, and graft them into the sprouts of the sort he wished to propogate. The meat supply raised in France is gradually diminishing. The annual deficit in the rations of the soldiers alone amounts to one and a half million of kilometers, and has to be supplied from abroad. It. is now proposed to discard salted meat and tinned meat, and resort to frozen fresh meat from America, Australia, and New Zealand.—Globe. The once famous Carlton oyster beds, Tasmania, are looking up again. A bivalve weighing 21bs., and measuring 15 indies in circumference, was taken the other day to tlie Mercury office. Some sample tins of boiled rabbits have been distributed by Messrs J. Marsden and Son, meat preservers of Christchurch and Kaikoura. The quality of the meat is excellent, and it has been so skilfully preserved as to retain the full flavour of the rabbit as if freshly killed. For continuation of news see fourth page. Tenders.
