News is to band from Dublin that the sentry on guard outside the city barracks was shot dead at his post last night. The assassin made off, and no cine of his whereabouts has yet been obtained. ALEXANDRIA, Oct. 16. Cherif Pasha, President of the Ministry has urged fresh objections to allowing Arabi and his fellow prisoners the services of English counsel on their trial. The matter is again under discussion between the Government and Sir E. Malet, British Consul-General, and pending a decision upon the point, the trial, which was fixed for to-day, has been further postponed, [argus specials per press ASSOCIATION.] LONDON, Oct. 12. Admiral Seymour is to receive the title of Baron Alcester. Sir Garnet Wolsley’s title remains unchanged. The British and Australian Trust and Loan Company, in the half-yearly report for June last, recommend a dividend of 10 per cent,, and that £4OOO added to the reserve fund. The seat of the Earl of Shrewsbury has been destroyed by fire. October 13. Serious floods bare occurred in the midland counties, and have caused a vast amount of damage. The Queen will, it is expected, return to London on the 17th November. (age special.) LONDON, Oct. 12. Lord Norton (better known as Sir C, B. Addersley), who took an active part in the establishment of Colonial SelfGovernment, has sailed from London for Sydney. (Received Oct. 18th, 1-10 p.m.) CAPETOWN, Oct. 16. It is announced that the Capo Government has decided to withdraw from Basutoland. LONDON, Oct.. 17. The Times to-day states that unless the Egyptian Government agree to accord Arabi a fair trial, and allow him the services of English counsel, the British Government will demand that Arabi should be handed over to the custody of British authorities in Egypt, A portion of the cargo of sheep per Chimborazo, shipped at Melbourne, consisting of 1893 carcases of sbeep, has been examined and found to be in excellent condition. The Sydney portion, of 2700 carcases, has not yet been opened up. AUSTRALIAN. [Reuter —Copyright. ] (Received October 17, 10 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 17. It is intended to hold a grand review of the Volunteer forces on the Prince of Wales Birthday, and it is probable that H. M. ships will co-operate on the occasion. The following are the latest betting quotations for the Melbourne Cop: Little Jack has advanced to 10 to 1, and Sting to 100 to 8. For the V.R.C Derby Navigator 2 to 1, Segenhoe 4 to I, Fryingpan, Little Jack, and Prometheus 10 to 1, Guesswork 16 to 1. Mulatto has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup.
