Quite a sensation .was caused in town last evening when if was ascertained that a well-known Government official had attempted, suicide under somewhat peculiar circumstances. It appears that Mr W. M. Lewis, assistant Crown Law officer, was to have been married in the afternoon to a young lady (Miss Dyer) but at the appointed time for the ceremony to take place, he failed to put in an appearance, and after waiting some time the assemblage were informed that Mr Lewis had been taken seriously ill, and could not attend. It is generally understood that Lewis made an attempt on his life by cutting his throat; but no definite information has, however, reached town as to his condition, although bis wounds are not believed to be of a serious nature. Lewis is a resident of Newton. LATER PARTICULARS. , It is very difficult to obtain full particulars in connection ' with the alleged attempted suicide last night. Various rumours Lave been afloat all.the morning,, , some-contending ■ tbaf-Mf Lewis was only; suffering from cerebral congestion, -and others brain trouble. It'is, however, well known that Lewis did make an attempt to cut his throat, and that this fact was admitted by Lewis’s mother to the mother of the young lady about to be married. The wounds are not at all of a serious nature, and the patient is progressing as well as can be expected. One medical gentleman who was called in to see Lewis, immediately it was ascertained what was the mat- : ter, states “ The immediate danger in my opinion is from cerebral congestion, and other brain trouble. Lewis has had an exciting time of it during the session and has overtaxed his powers.” The police are making enquiries into the affair, but, as yet, have been unable to obtain any particulars, the medical advisers preventing any persons visiting Mr Lewis.
