TO THE “ MAIL.” (per united press association.) Huntsmen Trespassing. Auckland.— Mr Fantham, of Cambridge, Waikato, summoned the huntsmen of the Hunt Club for trespass. Judgment was given for -plaintiff against twelve defendants for 40s damages, costs £lO 10s ; and four defendants, with costs, £lO 10s. Rich Quartz Discovery. Wellington.—A telegram received from Lyell states that splendid gold has been struck at the Victoria Emmanuel Mine, New Creek. Specimens brought down surpass anything obtained in the district for many years. Nominated Immigration. Wellington.—Nominations of immigrants have been forwarded by outgoing mail on Sunday to the number of 621, distributed as follows : —Otago, 264 ; Canterbury, 184 ; Wellington, 113 ; Taranaki, 7 ; Hawke’s Bay, 20 ; Nelson, 11 ; Marlborough, 10 ; Westland, 12. The Auckland list was not received in time to forward this mail. The above comprise 118 single men, 258 single women, and the remainder families. Whales off the Coast. Greyraouth.—Arrived yesterday evening the barque Examiner from Wellington, Captain Clarkson reports that during his 25 years’ experience he never saw so many whales as he encountered between Cape Farewell and Greymouth, 12 being in sight on one occasion, besides seeing them all the way, Rifle Meeting. Dunedin,—A most succesful meeting of the N.Z. Rifle Association is promised. Every district in Otago will be represented. Died in Gaol. Christchurch—John Walsh, 82 years of age, undergoing a sentence of five years, died in Lyttelton Gaol on Saturday. Sporting—Taranaki Nominations. New Plymouth.—Nominations for Taranaki races were sent in on Saturday night : —Steeplechase : Larry, Pianthus, Larrikin, Gorse, Fungus, New Year, Claggan, Grey Momus, Wide-a-awake. Flying Handicap : Hippodamia, Hipporina, Fishwoman, Lord of the Hills, Bon Jour, Gattacy, Flying Mary, Hinemoa, Scotch Mist, Redeemer, Taipo, Satoria. Breach of Promise Case. Wellington,—ln the Supreme Court todap, the breach of promise case Miss Svviney v. Leybourne, a government clerk, commenced this morning. The action is brought to recover £3OO damages. A STRANGE CASE. Wellington.—At the Supreme Court today, the man- Adams, convicted of conspiracy, was brought up for sentence. In a lengthy statement, he denied his guilt, and contended that he had been found guilty on false evidence. Judge Richmond said the case was extraordinary, and he intended not to make comments upon it at present. There were certain points requiring further consideration, and he would postpone judgment. The prisoner would be admitted to bail on finding surety for £2OO. MINISTER WANTED-MR-WRIGHT DECLINES. Wellington, With reference to a vacant portfolio, it‘has transpired that Mr. Wright was offered a seat in the Cabinet with the portfolio of Postmaster-General ; but although he was quite willing to join the Government, he would not accept any other portfolio than that of Minister of Public Works, as being the one his services, owing to his previous training, would best qualify him for. Mr Wright would have taken this portfolio if it had been vacant. He leaves for Christchurch this afternoon.
