Alexandria, 6th.—The British have evacuated Tantah and Damanhour, the Khedive’s Governors of those towns being confident of their ability to prevent any further outbreak or disturbance among the population. (Received October 7th, 3.10.) London, 6th, —Sir Auckland Colvin, who formerly occupied (he position of British Controller-General of Eyptian finance, is returning to Egypt. He has, it has transpired, been instructed to suspend the resumption of his former duties of control, and it is expected that these will now be permanently abolished, (Received October 9th, 11.15 a.m.) Alexandria, 6th.—lncreased emoluments which were accorded to officers of the Egyptian army under the terrorism which preceded the rebellion have now been revoked, and the former rates of pay will alone be granted.
Bank Robbery Melbourne, 7tb.—A daring but unsuccessful attempt was made at mid-day yesterday to break into the branch of the Commercial Bankof Avenel. The manager was absent at the time, but an alarm was given, and one of the burglars captured. The other escaped, though he was chased for some miles through the bush. SYDNEY FIRE INQUIRY. Sydney, 16th.—The inquiry into the cause of the fire by which the Garden Palace was destroyed was concluded to-day. The verdict of the jury was to the effect that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated. A rider was added censuring the Government for want of care exhibited by the manner in which the valuable property, documents, &c., destroyed by fire, were stored in the building. London Markets(Received 11-15 a.in. Oct. 9.) London, 6tb.—Australian tallow ; Best beef unchanged 44s 6d ; best mutton advanced Is to 475. Galvanised iron 26 guage remains at £l7 15s. LAND LEAGUE DEFUNCTNew York, 6th.—The Irish World newspaper has closed the fund which was being raised for the Land League, and in doing so has declared that the organisation is now defunct. SHOOTING IN IRELAND. London, 6th, —A daring attempt to shoot a grazier and two land agents, has been made near Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. Shots fired were unsuccessful, and the intended victims escaped. No clue has yet been obtained to the perpetrators of the outrage. Small-Pox on Steamer. (Received October 9th, 12.50 p.m.) Melbourne, this day—The Orient steamship Liguria, from London via the Cape, has arrived at the Heads and been placed in quarantine, owing to the prevalence of small-pox at Capetown. Gordon PashaCapetown, 6th.—Colonel Gordon, (Gordon Pasha) has resigned his position as commandant of the Cape forces, owing to a difference with the local Government. [N.B.
