WEIGHTS-WANGANUI RACING.

Wanganui. The following weights are declared for the Wanganui Jockey Club Spring Meeting, to be held on Friday, the 20th inst. ; WANGANUI STAKES HANDICAP.

HAWERA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (from our correspondent.) Wednesday. Tlio Council met to-day ; present, the Mayor fin the chair), Crs Partridge, Adamson, Bate, McLdowic, Winks, Thomson, King, and Symo. BOROUGH CHAMBERS. Report of committee for furnishing the new Borough Chambers was received and adopted.

DAY LABOR V. TENDERING. Tho Public Works Committee’s report" was received. Cr King found fault with tho Works Committee for employing day labor after they’agreed that it was a mistake, and that no work over £6 should bo let except by tender. Ho moved tho adoption of the report, Cr Partridge said the Works Committee bad done what they liked, without asking leave or consulting anybody. Cr Bate thought the criticism of the last speaker was fair, and would oppose the adoption of tho report. The Mayor drew attention to the resolution limiting tlio amount of day labor to £5. He thought the Works Committee were personally responsible for the amount they had spent, Cr Winks, in defending the policy, said the Committee could not help themselves. He was opposed to day labor. Ho had arranged with the contractors to cart the broken metal at 3d per yard, as it would be cheaper than calling for tenders. Cr Bate moved an amendment that the report be not adopted. Ho thought the Works Committee had overstepped thei 1 ’ dutyj and their report was very vague, Cr Partridge seconded. The report was adopted on division : namely, Ayes, Cr Adamson, McLdowic, Winks, Thomson, King, and .Syrae ; Noes, Crs Partridge, Bate, and the Mayor. REPORTS. Engineer’s report was received and ordered to lie on the table. Inspector of Nuisance’s report was received. Cr King moved that the Brewery drain be cleaned out. This was agreed to, and the report was then adopted. Several accounts were passed for payment. ENGINEER NOT WANTED. Cr Partridge moved.that the Engineer be given 3 months’ notice that his services are not required. He said it was an unpleasant duty, but he felt convinced that Mr Toy was not the right man. He might be the best railroad engineer in the colony, but he did not know anything about road making. Cr Winks seconded the motion. Cr Thomson moved an amendment that the Engineer be thanked for his past services, and that ho be given three months’ salary and asked to resign at once. Cr King seconded the amendment. The motion was withdrawn, and the amendment put and carried, BILLIARD ROOMS AGAIN. Cr King moved that the resolution affecting billiard rooms, passed at the last meeting, be rescinded, , Or Partridge seconded. Cr Thomson moved an amendment that the matter be held over until the bye-law has been amended ; but there being no seconder the amendment fell through. Cr Bate and the Mayor spoke against tho motion. The motion to rescind was carried on division. CUTTING DOWN SALARIES. Cr Winks moved that the officers of tho Council get the usual notice, and tenders be called to fill their places. Cr McLdowie seconded, Cr Thomson moved an amendment that the Council does not agree with tho system of calling tenders for new officers, Cr Partridge seconded. The amendment was carried without a division. LOCAL WANTS. It was resolved that tho Council wait on tho Hon. Mr Dick while in Hawcra. TENDERS, &g. Resolved to employ a temporary Fore man of Works, also that a specification bo made out for Engineer and Foreman of Works. The following tender was accepted' for formation of Union-street : M. Leneghan ... £lO5 The Council adjourned.
