TO THE “ MAIL.” «. (per united press association.) Hawkes’ Bay Frozen Meat. Napier, 3rd.—Shares in the Frozen Meat Company are being rapidly subscribed, and there are very few left. The capital is £50,000. The company takes over the present preserving and tinning works of Messrs Nelson and Williams, for which £30,000 is paid. Company Railway Scheme AbandonedChristchurch, 3rd.—A meeting of the promoters of the West Coast Railway was held this evening, at which it was determined not to proceed with the formation of a company, but to keep up agitation in favour of its replacing the proposed Government line. Fishing EnterpriseDunedin, 3rd.—A deep sea fishing public company is being floated here. Transit of Venus. Wellington, 3rd.— Arrangements are being made by the Surveyor-General for taking observations of the transit of Venus. Thunderstorms and Floods. Hokitika, 3rd.—Heavy thunderstorms took, place all last night, and the rivers are flooded and the coaches delayed in consequence. Football —N-S. Wales v- Auckland. Auckland, 3rd.—At the football match, Sydney versus Auckland, 3000 people were present. Heavy rain fell throughoutAuckland won by 18 points to 4, namely, two goals placed and one from the field, and two tries, against Sydney’s one goal, kicked from the field. Tha greatest excitement wasmanifeated by the assemblage. Betting, 3to 1 .on Auckland. The following comprised the Auckland team — Webster, back ; Ryan and Wood, threequarter backs ; Whitside, Sims, and Warbrick, half-backs ; Arniel, Carter, Clayton, Craxton, Bindon, Henderson, Biggs, Mackay, O’Connor, forwards. SCARLET FEVER INCREASING. Dunedin.—The Health Officer’s reports show of late that there has been an alarming increase of scarlet fever. During the last month, 24 cases were reported. Dr Maunsell has recently advised that the Council should not delay in the matter of erecting a fever hospital. The Council recommended the Government to erect such a building on the Dunedin hospital ground. Frozen Meat Steamer; Dunedin - .—The Refrigerating Company have chartered the s.S. Sorento to load frozen meat.
