MAORI DEPUTATION IN ENGLAND.
The London correspondent of the Dunedin Star , writes : The Maori furore is still at its height, and excites lively amusement amongst the few colonials who understand what the real status of Sydney Tawhenga is. During the past ten days the three Natives have been the guests of nearly all the great folks remaining in town, and enjoyed themselves regardless of expense. Mr Larkworthy gave a dinner at which several sprigs of the nobility were present “ to meet the Maori chiefs now in England.” Another, the Bishop of Lichfield, entertained them at the town of the same name. Captain Ashby escorted them on Sunday to the Zoological Gardens, and other colonists have been quite disappointed because the Natives were too much occupied to meet friends of theirs. To my mind the proceedings are a disastrous mistake and cannot fail to do harm. The financial portion
of the programme has been furnished partly by a philanthropic elderly spinster named Wild, who pays the Maoris’ passages home again, and partly by the Aborigines Protection Society. The Society have now, however, a monstrosity in the shape of Cetewayo, so that supplies from that source may soon run out.
