LIQUOR LAW IN HOLLAND.

A translated extract from Dagblaci states that the moral influence of the liquor law in Holland made itself felt in the first four months of the present year, although the law itself only came into operation on the Ist il/ay 1882. The excise revenue from spirituous liquors in the first four months of the present year was less by £(3,004 than in the corresponding period of last year. According to the official returns, the excise revenue from spirituous liquors in the month of JVay, 1882, was less by £5,050 than in the month of M&j, 1881. This represents a diminution of consumption in one month of 106,300 litres, or nearly 23,400 gallons of spirits. It may be well to remind our readers that the main provisions of these liquor laws are : —l. The supplying of strong drink to the half inebriate or to chrildren is regarded as a misdemeanor. 2. Only licensed persons are allowed to sell spirituous liquors by retail. 3. No one holding any public appointment can be licensed for such sale. 4. Only a limited number of licenses are issued.
