Starting Loan Works.

Good work was done by the Borough Council at their special meeting'on Monday night. The Mayor presided, and all Councillors were px-esent. (Specifications for proposed conti’acts were submitted by the Engineer. Councillor iMlroy wished to secure the Council in case of death or bankruptcy of a contractor, and this was effected by inserting, on the motion of Councillor Taplin, that sureties be required for the due fulfilment of each contract. Amount of surety was fixed at one-fourth the amount of contract. Agreed, on the Mayor’s motion, that all tar for timber be applied hot. Tenders for the following works were then agreed to be invited, and to be in within a fortnight ; Formation of Bedford-street ; penalty for excess of time to be £lO a week. Gravelling not to be included, but a separate contract to be made when suitable gravel is decided on. Councillor Taplin suggested that they should try shingle from the beach, It was abundant, and first-rate stuff for heavy traffic. Formation of Egmont-street south, including gravelling of footpaths and claying the street up to cricket-gate. Formation of Leicester sti’eet, with one footpath gravelled ; tenders to be in six weeks hence. Formation of Hadfield and Gloucester streets, with one footpath gravelled, and street graded temporarily. Amendment to postpone these streets three months was lost. Agreed that the penalties for Egmont street south and Leicester street be £4 a week, and for Gloucester and Hadfield streets £2 per week ; the time for completion to be fixed by the Engineer.
