WAR IN EGYPT.
DETAILS OF ENGAGEMENT. Alexandria, Sept. 11th.—An official despatch from Egypt, dated last evening, has been published. In it Sir Garnet Wolseley reports that all has been quiet in the neighborhood of Gassassine since Saturday afternoon. He further states that Arabi’s force employed during the engagement which took place that day numbered fully 15,000 men of all arms. They made a plucky and determined stand against the British troops, and their loss amounted to several hundred. The exact extent of their casualities cannot be ascertained. The official statement of the British losses gives the number at two killed and fifty-four wounded. (ARGUS SPECIALS.) Lord Dufferin has deferred signing the convention with Turkey, as he takes objection to several phrases used by the Sultan in the proclamation declaring Arabi a rebel. A general engagement is imminent. British troops and guns arc being hurried to the front. Five thousand Egyptians are advancing from Tel-el-Kibeer. Sir Garnet Wolsley has 17,000 men now at the front. Cricket AccidentsLondon, 11th.—In the I Zingari cricket match, Giffen hurt his knee, and Blackham lost some teeth through a ball delivered by Boyle. . , Famine in Ireland. An Argus despatch says the population of Ireland is being decimated by famine and measles. Strike of Ironworkers. Sydney.—The strike among men in the iron trade is extending. Employers uniformly decline to accede to the demands of the men for an increase in the rate of wages. Opposing Irish Immigration. Melbourne. —In the Legislative As-
sembly, Mr J. B. Paterson, in referring to the proposed Irish immigration to the colonies, gave notice that he would bring a motion before the House to the effect that it was not desirable to encourage the introduction of such a class of immigration.
