The thorough-bred sire Cap-a-Pie arrived in Hawera, from Auckland, on Saturday night. He is expected in Patea to-day, and will be shown about town to-morrow morning. We notice that the horse parade in Wanganui is fixed tor September 6th, the day after the horse parade here, and we are informed that one will detract from the other. Cap-a-pio would have been shown here had not the dates been so close. He stands at Wanganui, and will travel there by road, leaving here on Tuesday afternoon. A much needed improvement in the lighting of St George’s Church has just been effected by the presentation of an additional chandelier for the benefit of the choir. Baptismal offerings which had been made recently amounted to a sum nearly sufficient to make this purchase; and as the Rev Mr Keating refuses to accept such gifts for himself, he has devoted the money to this object. Mr E. Ellery Gilbert, piano tuner, will visit Patea about the 4th September, A Landslix* took place on Mr J. Hughes’s contract on the Kohi road last Saturday. It appears that the workmen were engaged at the bottom of a cutting about 60 feet high, the lower halt being of rock and the. upper loose earth, when without any warning about 600 yards of earth extending 4 or 5 chains along the face of the cutting broke clean away, burying a dray and tools. The workmen narrowly escaped. The loss to Mr Hughes is estimated at £2O. The permanent way from Waverley to Whenuakurais now almost completed, and ready for traffic with the exception of the ballasting. Messrs Wilkie and Crawford, the contractors, have for some time been delayed in their work, owing to the difficulty in obtaining timber.— Herald. McGuire Cur. —The fifth competition for this cup took place on the Patea Eifle range at 12 o’clock on Saturday. Representatives of outside companies did not put in an appearance. It was therefore left to six of the Patea Rifle Volunteers A strong and gusty wind was blowing daring the firing, which accounts for the small scores made. The ranges were (as before) 200, 400, 500 yards, Wimbledon target. The following are the scores : Yob T. Nutsford ... ... 55 Vol. W. Kitching 48 Sub-Lieut. J. Kitching ... 46 Sergt. H. It is made of Kakanni stone with a concrete and blue stone foundation, and bears a suitable inscription, the (ablet bearing it being wreathed with a hawser, above which is an anchor and cable, the whole being surmounted with a funeral urn. The Harmonic Society intended giving a concert at Waverley and one at Hawera in a short time, towards reducing the debt on the Hall, It is found, however, that the expenses for so large a number of performers would probably leave no credit balance, unless the audiences were exceptionally large; and this can hardly be expected in the present dull season. These out-of-town concerts are understood to be postponed to a future season.
The tender of Mr Hugh Clegg baa been accepted by Mr Tapi in for the erection of his new store and dwelling. Mr Clegg did excellent work in erecting the Harmonic Hal. The Gift Exhibition will open at Waverley on Wednesday. Mr J. E. The numbness in his limbs has been increasing since he returned from the Hot Springs, Country readers are invited to “assist” at the combined entertainment on Wednesday evening, by mustering the largest audience ever seen in the new ball, “ Trial by Jury ” is the most successful piece performed by the Harmonic Society, and the characters do their parts excellently. The dramatic piece is the clover and amusing comedy “ Cool as a Cucumber.” The Oil and Fibre Company’s directors met again on Saturday, at the Secretary’s office, all being present except Mr Sherwood (out of town).
