HAWERA.

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening, the Mayor in the Chair. Councillor Farrington’s motion for stopping the supply of gravel was withdrawn in favor of one by Councillor King, calling for tenders for a supply of 3000 yards of gravel and 1000 yards of boulders. Councillor Bate’s notice of motion “ That plans, specifications, and estimates be prepared for making a main sewer in High-street to be laid before next meeting ” was lost, Cr King moving an amendment, That the Engineer be asked to recommend the best way of spending the L 750 devoted to drainage. Resolved, That Princess-street from the Drill Shed to Cook’s corner be metalled 22 feet in the centre with broken metal, and the balance with gravel, providing the road is in a fit state to receive it. Tenders were accepted as follows ; For four street lamps complete, A. C. Leslie, L 4 7s 6d each ; for fire brigade material, A. Sinclair, L2O : for sinking an artesian well, C, M. Crooker, 10s per foot for 100 feet, and 12s per foot beyond. Councillors Thomson and Partridge having received the same number of votes at the election it was decided by lot which was to retire. Councillor Thomson’s name was drawn so he has to retire. There will therefore be Councillors Pritchard, Riddiford, and Thomson to go out of office. At the R.M. Court on Thursday before F. McGuire and Captain Wilson, J.P.’s. Edward Smith, of Hawera renown, had his grog stopped. Edward wanted to argue the matter out with their worships, but the bench beamed a sympathetic smile and told him to quit. He had to go. Poor Edward. Thomas Ecclesfield was summoned for allowing his cows to stray. Case dismissed. I. Lenehan was also summoned for a breach of the Borough bye-laws, but he appears to have been the wrong man, and therefore retired without a stain on his character. The weather for the last few days has been all that could be desired, but it looks like a little more rain to-day (Thursday.) The frame of the Borough Chambers was fixed up ..to-day. The contractor expects to complete the job in about two months.
