Mr Wright is “keeping his” eye’’ on New Plymouth breakwater. He has been asking Government some awkward questions ; and particularly whether they are aware that the present rate of cost is about 50 per cent, more than the marine engineer quoted in the enquiry last August. The Maoris who went Home a short time ago to lay some petty grievances before the Queen have not had a happy time. They left here with £3OO, and that is all spent. A proposal wss mooted to make a “ show ” of them, but the managers of the halls said natives wouldn’t “ draw.” The hotel keeper threatened to take their presents from them, and they are in a sore plight. A late telegram states that they have “ raised the wind,” and sail for New Zealand next month.
