TO THE “MAIL.” + (per united press association.) DIRECT STEAM SERVICE. Wellington.—ln the House Mr Johnston has given notice to move—(l.) That it is not expedient that any attempt should be made for the present to establish a direct steam postal service between England and New Zealand, as the large subsidy which would necessarily be required would more than counterbalance the advantages. '(2.) That the San Francisco mail service now in operation should be extezided for two or three y'ears, if the cost of extension does not exceed the present cost to the colony. (3.) That it is of importance that there should beamonthy passenger and mercantile steam service established between England and New Zealand by suitable steam vessels, (4.) That the length of the voyage each way should not exceed fifty days. (5.) That any contract should not be for more than three years. (6.) That the cost of such service to the colony should not exceed £40,000 per annum. (7.) The Government are hereby authorised to take the necessary measures to give effect to these resolutions. ROADS ANDIEIDGBS BILL. Wellington.—The Roads and Bridges Construction Bill was introduced last night, and read a first time. . This bill is to enable local bodies to levy a special rate and borrow from government for necessary works. Family Poisoned. Christchurch.—A family were made very ill 'by eating a bullock’s heart, cooked soon after killing. One child died, and a post mortem showed the presence of some irritant poison, which is to be further tested. Wharfage Rates Grievance-Greymouth.-—A public meeting has protested against the high charges for wharfage, and asked Government to reduce the same as at Westport. IMMIGRATION AND LABOR. Wellington.—Mr Rolleston informed the House to-day that in view of resuming immigration, the Government are favorably disposed to establish a system of labor registration, and invited suggestions.
