SIR GEORGE WHITMORE.
Sir George Stoddart Whitmore, K.C.M.G., whose services as Commandant of the NewZealand Militia have been recognised by his appointment to the 2nd Class of the St. Michael and St. George, is a veteran officer of our Army, who retired in 1862. He was long connected with the Cape Mounted Rifles, and saw service in the latter part of the Kaffir war in 1847, in the action of Boern Plaats and defeat of the insurgent Boers in 1848, and throughout the Kaffir war of 1852-53, when he was present with the 2nd Division in nearly every affair, including the storming of the Iren Mountain. He commanded Sir Harry Smith’s escort from March to November, 1851, during which time he was repeatedly employed as a staff officer with the various colums on patrol. From November, 1841, to October 1852, he acted as brigade major to the 2nd Division, and in same capacity to the cavalry brigade in the expedition under Sir George Catbcart, ending in the battle of Berea. In the Kaffir war he had two horses shot under him in action, and was repeatedly thanked in brigade and division orders, as well as in the general orders and despatches of Sir H. Smith and Sir G. Cathcart. During the Russian war he was gazetted to a company in the 62nd Regiment, and was employed with the Turkish Contingent, receiving a brevet majority, and the 4th Class of the Medjidie for his services. Sir George has also the Kaffir war, Turkish, and New Zealand medals, the last gained in the campaigns against the Maories.—Broad Arrow.
