PROFIABLE PROPHESY.
About 700 people have lately been duped by a Birmingham prophet. He ingeniously adapted his profession to all classes. The religious were instructed by him as to the exact date of the end of the world. Ladies of a certain age received directions how “to cause the visits of lovers.” Invalids were supplied with talismans at a very reasonable price, as compared with physician’s fees. For five shillings, for example, a charm could be purchased that insured safe delivery in childbirth. Travellers were taught what were lucky days to start upon, boys how to conjure, sleepers (a large public) how to secure pleasant dreams. In casting horoscopes this gentleman was not only skilful, but admirably prudent. “When two persons arc under the same planetary influence,” he begs to remind them that “ their horoscopes will be somewhat similar.” A M.S. work found among the prophet’s effects, full of stereotyped replies to clients, explained the wisdom of this precaution.
