This Afternoon.
THE WAR-RESULT OP THE BATTLE-
Alexandria, 6th.—Accounts to hand of the battle between the British and Arabi’s ■forces at Ramleh, show that after some severe fighting, the enemy’s advanced posts on the left were driven in and fell back, and Arabi was then compelled to deploy the whole of his available force in front of Kafradowar.
The British artillery and infantry followed up, and the former were soon able to silence the enemy’s guns at Kafradowar but the infantry had very different ground to cover, and wore unable to take full advantage of their gain. The marines on enemy’s right behaved splendidly, and drove the Egyptians back to their second line. The marines suffered somewhat during the engagement. The object of the reconnaisance having been gained, the British troops withdrew from their position at nightfall. Our loss ’is at present unknown, but i has been ascertained that many Egyptians were taken prisoners. British ReinforcementIntelligence is to hand that a further force of British troops is now being landed at Ismailia, in the Suez canal. Killed and WoundedLater. —It is now known that the British loss during yesterday’s engagement was one officer and three rank and file killed, and 29 rank and file wounded. The enemy’s loss has. not yet been ascertained, but is known to have been very heavy, in addition to the number of prisoner’s taken. Troops from IndiaBombay, 6th.—The first detachment of Indian troops has sailed for Egypt. Cricket Tour. London, sth.—The cricket match at Clifton betweeen .Australians and eleven of Gloucester has resulted in a victory for the former by one inniugs with 159 runs to spare.
