(per united press association.} Outbreak of French Convicts. Auckland.—The captain of the schooner Telegraph, which arrived from Noumea on the 25th, reports an outbreak among the convicts. A number attempted to escape with a view of seizing one of the i vessels in the harbor. Several were shot I down by the military, and the outbreak was quelled. - The authorities succeeded in keeping the matter out of the New Caledonia papers. OTAGO REFRIGERATING ENTERPRISE. Dunedin.—The first annual meeting of the N.Z. Eefrigerating Co,, was held on the 26th. The report showed that the works were now complete, and operations would be begun early next month to prepare a cargo for the steamer to arrive in beptember. The total expenditure in site and works to date had been £11,534, and £3OOO more - would be required for their thorough equipment. Mr Larnacb, the chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, referred in the extreme importance of the undertaking. RICH GOLD AT REEF TON. Schooner Overdue. Auckland.—Fears are entertained for the safety of the schooner Calhina, 38 days out from Port Chalmers for Auckland. Winiata’s Confession. Auckland.—Winiala has now confessed to several persons that he did murder Packer.
