HAWERA.

BOROUGH COUNCIL AFFAIRS. (FB OM OUR CORRESPONDS NT. )

The Borough Council held a special meeting last week, for the purpose of appointing an acting Mayor. The Mayor was in the chair, and gave his reasons for resigning. They were on account of the gravel being stopped. He thought it ought not to be stopped ; but a stronger part of the Conndl differed, and had carried their point. He was prepared to contest the election with anyone of the opposition, and if he lost the election he would pay the cost of it, if the other side would agree to do the same. Cr Bate proposed and Councillor King seconded, That Councillor Thomson be appointed acting Mayor.—Carried. Another special meeting was held on Friday evening ; the acting Mayor in the Chair. It was resolved that the gravelling be continued, and deposited in the depot. Resolved, that four lamps be obtained, to be placed between the Railway and Cook’s corner.

The acting Mayor placed a return on the table shewing the amount of money that had been spent, and the work done since the formation of the Council.

The acting Mayor said that before they adjourned he wanted to call the attention of the Council to a letter from a Councillor that had appeared in Wednesday’s issue of the Star , complaining of the clerk’s absence. He objected to ihe officers of the Council being abused in the press. If the writer had enquired into the matter he would have found that the clerk had permission to leave ; but in any case had he not leave, it was the duty of a Councillor to make his complaint to the Council. He could see that little or no blame was attached to the Clerk. Councillor King said the Clerk ought to have known better than to be absent, especially at the time he was. Councillors Bate and Prichard said they could not see that the Clerk was in any way to blame. Councillor McLdowie said he knew of persons who called three or four times: during the week and found the office closed, and he objected to it; • The matter then dropped, and the Council adjourned. FOOTBALL BEATING. The evening paper of Patea seems to be sore about the result of the football match, judging from the report ,* but we can afford to read such childish doggerel with the same calm and placid indifference that a St. Bernard dog would view the antics of a poodle. Our fellows told me it was a very enjoyable match (but f§r the weather.) The football match that was to have come off on Saturday between Opnnake and Hawera has been indefinitely postponed, on account of the bad weather. STOCK SALE. Mr Jackson’s sale on Friday was a very poor onertfiere being no buyers Tor anything under the hammer. Some few lots were sold afterwards, I believe.
