The Timaru Harbor Board are an unfortunate lot. An iron surf boat which cost £420 was lately sunk. Dunedin and Port Chalmers are nov; connected by telephone, and there are no less than 103 subscribers to the Dunedin exchange. A trial of a patent lifebuoy, painted with luminous paint, was made last week at Timaru. Two tiny paddles are used to propel the person after he has inserted himself in it, but as the water looked very chilly, and the person who designed this wonderful “ machine ’’ not being present, it was not practically tried, but was simply thrown into the water. When it was a short distance away, it is said a stranger might very easily mistake it for some object with its mouth wide open ready to swallow him up, and the renowned luminous paint and lifebuoy were designated a failure by those who witnessed its trial. Life in Northern Mexico must not be very inviting. Lately 141 citizens were massacred, and property to the amount of £15,000 stolen and destroyed by the Indians.
