OIL AND FIBRE COMPANY.
The intended meetings at Kakararnea, Manutahi, and Woodville have had to be altered. The chairman of directors, MiBarker, attended at Kakararnea yesterday to give information and enrol new members. The Secretary was unable to be present, as he is under sub-poena to attend the District Court in W. Williams’s case. This also prevented him from going to Manutahi for the meeting this afternoon ; and the Chairman being also unable to go, the meeting has had to lapse. The Chairman and Secretary’ have now arranged to hold a public meeting in connection with the company’ at Manutahi Hotel immediately after the sale at Mr Balmfovth’s next Thursday..- It is intended that some members of the company 7 shall interview settlers at the sale, and that after (he sale there shall be a business-like conference held among these settlers who can meet at the hotel, to give information and enrol shareholders. Some settleis may find it more convenient to meet at the Kakararnea Hotel, and it can be arranged that certain directors or officers shall attend at each hotel to transact business in connection with this important" local company. The meeting at Woodvine, will have to lapse in consequence of the Chairman and Secretary being unable to attend on Monday 7 , - Tt. is .hoped that Woodville settlers will take part in the business conferences to be. held after Bahnforth’s sale.
The Waverley meeting is also altered, for the same. reasons, to Friday 7 afternoon, after Mr Jackson’s sale, and it is hoped that settlers will find it convenient to attend both meetings at Ballam’s Hotel; Several settlers are mentioned as willing to take up shares, and these should attend the meetings or communicate with the Secretary, Mr Cowern,. not later than Saturday next, when the adjourned meeting is to be held for floating the company. Mr J. O’Sullivan, Kakararnea, took five shares yesterday.

PREPARING DEFENCES,
Appeals are made to the Government from harbor authorities at Auckland and Christchurch to have defences put in order, in consequence of the Egyptian difficulty. The Wellington correspondent of the Taranaki Herald telegraphed yesterday • The Cabinet is now considering the defence question, together with that of the reorganisation of the Volunteer force. As far as I can gather, a telegram will be sent Horne for war material, more especially torpedoes and defence apparatus of that class, the Government considering that danger is to be apprehended not from heavy ironclads, but from light and swift, cruisers, of which. Russia has many. The telegram, will also ask for the necessary apparatus to mount the heavy guns already in the colony, now lying useless. The interesting point of the whole thing s that this message must necessarily pass through the hands of the Russian telegraphists. It will, of course, be in cypher, but the Russians are noted adepfs at de* cyphering. ALARM AT. MELBOURNE. (REUTER’S' TELEGRAMS.) Melbourne, 14th.— The Government intend that the turret ship Cerberus shall be fully manned and equipped for active service, in case of necessity. ■Considerable dissatisfaction exists among men of the naval reserve in consequence of new regulations. •....
