Mr Cowern) by Mr Robb, from Dunedin, who will rebuild the works, and probably add a fellmongery. A shilling rate is to be levied for County roads, payable October sth; Councillors have acted on the Engineer’s recommendation that it will be cheaper to put the roads, in a good state of repair, instead of patching ; and hence the Is rate. This is the highest rate levied since the first year the County was formed.

In consequence of the detention of the ss Wakatn for two days through rough weather, the trip to Westport is postponed until further notice. Although only about half the capital is promised, it would be a serious mistake to drop a project which promises such help to the district. The annual report of the Wanganui Acclimatisation Society shows the financial position to be as follows: Balance from year 1880, £39 2s Id ; fines, subscriptions, and license fees for 188081, £256 18s sd; total £296. The total expenditure, as per balance sheet, amounts to £145 17s 3d, leaving a balance of £l5O 3s 3d to credit for the year 1881. The license fees issued for the present season will amount to £ll7 for shooting licenses, and £5 for license to sell game, thus giving a total of £272 3s 3d for the society to operate upon.
