Reports to the Council.
BOROUGH ENGINEER'S REPORT The Borough Engineer reported to the Council on Monday as follows : During the past month four contracts have been started, one only has been completed, namely forming footpath in Egmont-street north. Owing to the limited time at my disposal, I did not measure the length required, but roughly scaled off the plan, and when completed it turned out to be 30 chains. However, the cost is £5 under the authorised sum in your instruction of 10th May last. The earthwork contract in Chester street is about finished. That in Vic-toria-street is progressing satisfactorily. The kerbing contract was suspended for several days, through the difficulty in getting limber, but is now in hand. Since receiving yoiir instructions to prepare a new scheme for improvements in the Borough, I have lost no time, myself and assistants working until 10 o’clock at night. I need scarcely acquaint you that your instructions of the 21st June involved a great deal of labor in preparing sections of streets named therein, and alterations to those already before you. I am pleased to inform yon that although I am not able to lay the new scheme before you this evening, the data has been. procured, and the plans are in a forward state. WORKS COMMITTEE. The following report of the Works. Committee was submitted to the Borough Council on Monday : Your Works Committee have to report that the following expenditure for gravel and day labor has been incurred during the past month. 115 yards of gravel were supplied from Mr Tennents’ pit, and distributed partially on York, Egmont, and Meredith streets; 89 yards were supplied from pit at the Heads for footpath in Egmont-street and part of Meredith-street. Labor.— 5 hours labor of man repairing and clearing water-tables and filling ruts at Patea bridge, at Is per hour; Hogan, 3 days labor at 7s 6d; O’Meara, 25 days 3 hours, finding and spreading gravel, clearing water-tables, and filling/ ruts, Meredith-street. The east end p{ Meredith-street for about 2 chains T?as
found to be almost impassable. This has been remedied at considerable cost. INSPECTOR OF NUISANCE. The report for the month was read as follows: I have to report a nuisance on Sec. 2 Block XII, all the refuse from the house being thrown on the yard, and consequently running into the street. Since 3rd July the property has been under different management, and I have given notice to present occupier to abate the nuisance. 1 would bring to your notice that several occupiers of land have neglected to attend to. the trimming of furze hedges, as required by the Borough bye-laws. I would respectfully suggest that an advertisement be put in the papers as a warning to them. I have only registered one dog since the Ist July. From the Ist July the tax is only ss, the Act providing that it should be that sum.
