Patea Borough Council.
The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday evening. Present, Messrs Sherwood (Mayor) Adams, Gibson, Howitt, Milroy, Tapliri, and*Mahoney. Permission was given for a lamp post to be erected opposite the Harmonic Hall. It was mentioned in connection with this that the kerbing of that street would be completed in the course of eight or ten days.
Subject to examination and approval of the Engineer, a right of way, applied for by Mr Howitt, was assented to. The Manager of the Bank of New Zealand applied to be allowed to remove the old hitching posts from the former bank premises opposite to the new bank. Objection was made that old posts were not in keeping with the new .handsome bank premises. It was resolved that hitching posts for erection in town should of a pattern as per drawings to be seen at the Borough offices.
Application made by the Fire Brigade for a grant in aid was deferred until the Borough funds were iq better condition. A good water supply was mentioned as the most practicable mode of assisting the brigade. The matter will be reconsidered after the loan scheme is settled.
It was resolved to erect protection wings on the town side of the Patea bridge, to prevent crossing cattle from rushing down to the river. The Mayor announced that plans and estimates of the new scheme of public works now in course of preparation would be ready in twelve or fourteen days. A special meeting would be called to consider the scheme. Banking AccountThe banking account was again discussed. The Mayor pointed out that antil the new loan is raised there will be no banking account to transfer. It was agreed that the question could be considered when’the bank of New Zealand’s rate of charge was ascertained in the usual way. Gravel. Resolved on the motion of Councillor Milroy, seconded by Councillor Gibson, That the Engineer be requested to inspect the gravel pits on Mr Tennent’s property, and report as to the amount' of gravel available at a reasonable-tost, and also the cost of road where requested by Mr.-Tennent. AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE. The Mayor mojcd, and Councillor Mahony seconded / a motion, That in the opinion of Jthis Council, the land known as the/University reserve near this town, Containing 10,000 acres, should be ufced as an endowment for the establishment and maintenance of an Agricultural College upon a portion of the sai<3 land; and that the mover be hereby authorised to communicate with the/Minister of Lands and the Member the district, as a preliminary step to /liaving a bill brought before the House to effect the object sought. The motion met with general approval and was carried.
ELEOTRIC LIGHT. , The Mayor moved, and Councillor Mahony seconded a motion, That application be made to the Brush, Swan, or any other Electric, Light Company,for full information as to the cost of lighting the town withthe electric light, particulars to be given as to lighting streets, stores, and dwelling houses, and cost of motive power. The practicability of a scheme being speedily developed for lighting small towns at moderate cost by electricity was hopefully discussed, and the motion was carried. Rate for 1882-3. Intention to strike a rate of Is in the pound was formally confirmed.
