FENIAN RISING.
A cable message just received says a r ising is expected in Ireland, and that the London Times office has to be guarded by the police.
The good state of .the weather of late has enabled Mr Wilkie to make rapid progress with the plate-laying on the Waverley- Whennakura section. The rails are now laid across the road leading into Mr Symes’s property, where the engine can now go with trucks and timber. Should the good weather continue, the iron horse will soon be running as far as Whennakura.
A slight mishap occurred at the Town Hall, Waverley, last Saturday evening. Master Ballam (son of Mrs Ballain of the Commercial Hotel) while skating, happened to get a buster.” He was promptly picked up by Mr Read, and at first declared his leg was broken, but was afterwards convinced that such was not the case, although it was rather severely sprained. He was removed home, where he is now improving.
The Waverley Town Hall will present a gay appearance to-morrow evening, when a grand ball, arranged by certain wealthy settlers, is to take place. An efficient band has been engaged, and all other neccessaries are procured. Invitations, to the number of three hundred, have been issued to persons between Hawera and Marton, but we hear that there is a little feeling as to whether some who have been overlooked by the Committee ought or ought not to have been invited.

A new steam shipping company with a proposed capital of £20,000 is being formed at Wanganui, It is said the average trade of the port is 1800 tons per month, and the passenger trade averages 500 monthly. It is proposed to build one steamer. The Road Board election at Hawera has resulted in the three Whakamara candidates being out-voted. This is considered a hardship, and it has been suggested that if Whakamara could agree to nominate one member, a vacancy would be created for him on condition there should be no contest for the vacant seat. Mr Foreman was therefore nominated at a public meeting in Whakamara on Saturday ; and it is understood that a vacancy will now be created for him to fill.
It is reported from Wellington that a flying survey to ascertain the route for for the main trunk line of railway from Auckland Southward will be made in the usual way by the Public Works Department, but even if the Natives were anxious .that the work should be begun at once it wuld be impossible to do so at the present wet season of the year.
We understand that Mr M’Kittrick’s insolvency was not caused by arrear of ot rent, which had always been paid regularly, but was the result of backing a bill for a relative to the amount of £3OO, and the bill not being met at maturity, the bank of New South Wales advised Mr M’Kittrick that the bill must be met. He appears to have taken no notice of the warning, treating the whole matter as the affair of his relative. The bank construed this silence as a refusal to pay, and sent bailiffs to make a seizure. Mr M’Kittrick then declared himself bankrupt to to protect other creditors. The first meeting of creditors is fixed for Friday next. It is supposed the bank’s claim will have to be paid off to enable creditors to realise the estate for their common benefit. As the bankruptcy law is notoriously deficient, an effort should be made by creditors to keep the management of this estate in their own hands, by appointing supervisors to act with a trustee. A speedy and economical winding up may then be expected.
Poor Mr Saunders was not only badly beaten in the Waknnni election, but he was howled down by a noisy mob when attempting to speak after the declaration of the poll. They would not let him unburden his mind ; yet he must have had a lot to say. Mr Saunders is a colonial Diogenes; an over-wise, disappointed, soured old man.
New members in the House are said to be favorably impressed with the safe, steady, and favorable character of the Financial Statement. Opposition partisans are rather non-plussed at the cautious avoidance of any novelty on which they might seize for party purposes. The Treasurer is too wily for them.
Nothing new, do you say? Why, there is a German astronomer with a very long name, who has discovered that the planet Mars has not only oceans and continents, but that the equatorial regions of the planet show many parallel lines resembling narrow arras of the sea cutting far into the land ; and it is evSTi conjectured that these long regular lines may be artificial canals. Professor Proctor also supports the discovery, and says these canals look like gigantic engineering works. He hints, however, that they may be only an optical illusion, a sort of astronomical mirage. It is a pity to spoil a good story by suggesting that it is “ all my eye” and Peggy j what’s-her-name.
A Ghost has been a winter horror at Timaru. It flicks and glides about sequestered roads outside the town ; here to-night, in another place next night; always somewhere, yet never anywhere long enough for the police to “ run it in.” This ghost goes about in a white sheet, which is the regulation costnme for disembodied spirits. It also leaps over hedges, but whether it falls into a wet ditch on the other side is not known for certain. This ghost has been seen by many women and children. It rather avoids the men, which shows that it exercises a ghostly prudence by keeping out of kicking distance. This is the second ghost that has haunted the outskirts of Timaru ; there being a ghost last winter flitting about, and frightening timid people into fits. The best protection against ghosts is a good sized stick.
A Practical Joke has been played on the editor of the Timaru Herald, He is no end of a clever fellow ; has strong opinions; knows almost everything ; and is nearly as egotistical as Macaulay used to be in his “ Quarterley ” essays. Mr Wakefield had been “sitting on ” the M.H.R. for Timaru; and in fact had annihilated him with a Latin quotation. A correspondent sent to the editor a nice sort of letter, approving of the Latin quotation, and adding that it was almost as expressive as a wellknown Erse proverb, which ran thus: “ S’ Sana si dlareh, ehtfo rotide eht.” —The good matured editor printed the letter and the Gaelic proverb, believing it to be the ancient Erse language, because that was about the only language he did not understand. Then came the laugh at the editor’s expense, for the proverb was a wicked joke of the simplest kind. Read the Erse proverb backwards, and you will find it comes out thus: “ The editor of the Herald is an ass.” March op Civilisation. —The guile less Maori, like the heathen Chinee, is beginning to appreciate some of the luxuries of British laws. We observe that Henare Haeretuterangi, otherwise Henare Te Arc, and Aropeta Haretuterangi, both of Wellington Province, have filed declarations of insolvency. Their first meetings were called for June 19. Te Whiti and Tohn appear to feel the cold in the South very much. The Morning Herald says Te Whiti asserts that a star will appear in the daytime to guide him to Parihaka, and that he is only waiting for this star to appear, when he will return to his village at Mount Egmont. He believes himself to be one of the chiefs of Israel, and connects the persecution of the Jews in Russia in some way with what has happened to him.
