New Loan Scheme for Patea.

The Borough Council met on Monday as a committee to frame a new loan scheme; and it is satisfactory to hear that they came to a practical agreement on a scheme of works to be spread over the whole borough, and requiring a loan ranging between £5,000 and £IO,OOO. The Council met as a committee at 10 a.m. Present, the Mayor (in the chair), Councillors Taplin, Milroy, Aitchison, Adams, Gibson, Dixon, Howitt, and Mahony. They agreed to inspect Bedford street, and we are informed that they came to a conclusion to alter the high-level grade of the previous scheme, by making the level along the flat about 3 feet 6 inches higher than the present general level, thereby reducing the amount of filling which would be required to make a high grade. The Engineer will have to grade the street accordingly; also grade the side streets connecting with it; and report the estimated cost of forming the full width from the bridge to Taplin’s corner, with footpaths also filled in, thus making the street and paths chains broad altogether, and completing this main approach from the railway and wharves to the town.

The committee returned to the Council chamber, and sat till four in the afternoon (with a short adjournment). The result may bo stated in general terms, pending the committee’s report to the Council. We are told there was a unanimous opinion in favor of including a large number of street improvements and drainage for execution out of the loan, the amount to be fixed later, when the Enginceer. has had time to report his estimated cost of these works. It is expected that his report will be ready for the next monthly meeting of the Council, first Monday in July. We publish this general statement of what was done in committee; because Councillors are not disposed to treat this loan scheme as a matter to be kept secret from ratepayers. They rather wish the ratepayers to be informed that practical and satisfactory progress Is being made with a new scheme.
