ALARM IN EGYPT.

SHOPS AND BANKS CLOSED.

Alexandria, 17 th. — Vessels are being sent by European powers to take subjects on board. Cairo, 17th.—Panic is increasing. All foreign banks and shops are closed, and Europeans are hurrying to Alexandria. Ships in harbor cannot take all who wish to leave the shore.

WOOL SALESLondon, 17th.—At to-day’s auction, a firm market was again experienced. 7000 bales were catalogued.

SEIZURE OF ARMS—IRELAND. London, 17th.—The police to-day effected the seizure at of a large quantity of arms which were known to have been intended for shipment to Ireland.

Dr Richards, of Hawera, has “ filed.” Mr Powdrell’s eldest daughter, aged, eight years, has died of inflammation of the brain.

Mr Barker’s stock sale on Thursday will comprise 40 yearlings mixed and 15 two-year old steers, in addition to the entries advertised.

Mr Hamerton having taken a house at Hawera for residence, the impression, may have got about that he would not attend as usual at his Patea office. The following note from him will explain his position :—“ I have read with surprise and annoyance a local in your issue of Friday, relating to myself; and as it is very misleading, and calculated to injure me professionally in Patea, I feel called upon to contradict it. Let me say that I am not aware of any alterations whatever about to take place in the charge, conduct, or management of my Patea business. It will continue to be entirely in my own charge, and conducted solely by myself as at present, and the same time and attention will I trust always be devoted to it.— Yours truly, Gervase D. Hamerton.’*
