This Afternoon. COAL STRIKE AT NEWCASTLE. Sydney, this day.—Negociations which were recently resumed at Newcastle with a view to terminate the miners’ strike have now failed, as no agreement could be come to as to a basis upon which arbitration should be proceeded with. The men have now subrnited their ultimatum to Mr Greyson, manager of the Agricultural Company’s Colliery, who is considering the same. TROUBLES IN EGYPTRIOTERS ARRESTED. Cairo, 16th.—British, French, and other consuls-general resident here ha% 7 e gone to Alexandria. Alexandria, 14th.—Ringleaders in the recent attack upon Europeans have been arrested. In consequence of the unsettled condition of the city, the garrison has been largely increased. The total force of troops is,now 12,200. ANOTHER DEADLOCK in VICTORIA Melbourne, this day. Rumors are current that in view of the present political crisis, the Government intend to ask for a dissolution. The statement requires confirmation. Failing an amicable settlement between MinisteriaJs and the Opposition the defeat of Government is considered certain. A meeting has been held between Berry and 22 of the Opposition, and coalition is deemed probable. It has transpired that Mr Berry and his supporters have intimated their readiness to join Mr Francis, and support his motion condemning the remission of taxation. VESSEL IN DISTRESS. Westpor.t—A schooner is anchored off the north beach flying signals for a tug. Her canvas is blown to ribbons, but if the anchor holds, the vessel will be safe. The sea Is too heavy for steamers in port to go to her assistance. Opinion is that she is the Fleetwing. LONDON WOOLLondon, 14th.—10,600 bales were catalogued at to-day’s wool sale. Good competition was experienced at full current rates.
