Wellington.—Mr Eolleston announced in the House; to-day that the Governor had obtained, six months’ leave of absence in order to visit England on private business, and that he intended to do so.
Christchurch. The last of the wool sales this season was held yesterday. The highest prices were as follows :—First combing, Is ;crossbred, 9£d. ... Second combing and third combing, Is 6d. ■ First clothing, Is 6|d • second and third do, Is s£d. Christchurch.—The prisoner Longmore alias Elms ■ alias Elmsdaie, on remand for burglary, made his escape this morning through a window in the room in which he was confinedwhile waiting for the opening of the Court. He has not yet been re-captured. Wellington.—lnformation received that steamer Westport is on shore in Horseshoe Bay, 6 miles from Akaroa Heads. No lives lost. Captain thinks she can be got'off with assistance. W anganui .—ln an article on Rangitikei Bridge the Herald says repeated warnings had been given to the authorities of the dangerous condition of the bridge, and something very like what Has< occurred was foretold. It strongly urges inquiry, and states' it was only by accident that there was not a disaster of the same nature as Tay Bridge.
