THE EARTH AND MAN IN THE FUTURE.
Mr Denton in l|is concluding lecture at Wanganui, reasoning from the past of the earth, thought it was only in the morning of its existence, that man’s reign was just begun, and that there was probably before him a period of a thousand million of years before man attained his prime. During that time he would be subject to process of continual development ; and referring to his. spirit, this would pass into, another sphere of existence and partake of the same principal of gradual progress. Finally, when the earth began to cool and wrinkle, man’s decline would come. Then there would be great mountains and deep valleys, and man would recognise that his time on earth was drawing to a close. He thought that the earth would finally break up into meteorites which would be drawn into the sun, supplying it with some of its fuel. The notion that the earth was going to be
burnt up in a few years he ridiculed as unworthy the serious consideration of any man of sense, and asked what object was tp be served by such -a catastrophe.
