THE EGYPTIAN DIFFICULTY. Constantinople, sth.—Frequent communications have been passing between foreign ambassadors and the Porte on the proposal to hold a conference for settlement of the Egyptian question. It has transpired that the Turkish Government, without absolutely rejecting the proposal, has strongly urged that a Conference would be useless in bringing about'the result desired. A majority of the powers have, it is understood, accepted the views of the Porte, and it is considered unlikely that a conference will be held.
Alexandria, sth.—ln compliance with the demand of the Sultan, Arabi Pasha has ordered the stoppage of works which were proceeding for fortification of this city.
LONDON MONEY AND PRODUCE* London, sth. Consols remain at 100$. New Zealand securities are at the following quotations: New Zealand 5 per cent. (10.40) loan, 106$. New Zealand 5 per cent. (1889) loan, 105. New Zealand 4$ per cent. (1879-1904) loan, 103$. The market rate of discount has declined sth, and is now quoted at 2$ per cent. The Bank rate is 3 per cent. Australian tallow is firm at 43s 6d for best beef, and 44s 6d for best muttom Adelaide wheat, ex store, 51s. Adelaide flour, ex store, 345. New Zealand wheat, ex warehouse, 51s. Wool and Frozen Meat.
London, 3rd.—Adelaide wheat is quoted to-day at 51s 3d (? 50s 3d) for off coast cargoes.
At the wool sale to-day 10,700 bales were offered. The market is rather weaker for most descriptions, but fine to finest qualities are firm. A portion of the cargo of frozen meat, ex ship Dunedin, was sold at auction today, and realised an average of 6jd per lb for mutton and 7£d per lb for lamb. Steamer Sunk in Collision. Sydney.—-The ferry steamer Fairlight 315 tons, ran into and sank the steamer Osprey, 32 tons, off Port Macquarie, in the harbor to-day. The crew of the Osprey were all saved. Boiler Explosion. Melbourne, 'June 6.—A disastrous boiler explosion occurred at Apall’s Stearine Candle Manufactory, Brownshill, to-day. The building was seriously damaged, and one man lost his life. Canada. . Ottawa, 6th.—H.R.H. Princess (Marchioness, of Lome) -arrived at Quebec today from England.
COLLIERS’ WAGES DISPUTE.
Sydney, This day.—The Newcastle, Agricultural Coy’s miners have declined to submit the matters in dispute to arbitration on the terms proposed, and have decided to refer the subject to the whole district. Great disappointment is felt at the failure of negotiation for arbitration.
