The Proposed Railway from Tauranga to Rotorua*
Tauranga.'—The largest meeting ever held here took place on Saturday. All parts of the Bay of Plenty were represented, and it was decided unanimously to form a company to construct a railway from Tauranga to Rotorua, via Takate. Capital £250,000, in £1 shares, 50,000 being for the promoters. 5000 shares have been already taken up.= A resolution was unanimously carried calling on Captain Morris to ask Government to bring in a Bill to enable the company to start, or, failing their doing: so, calling on him to bring in a Bill himself. Other matters affecting the; district were also exhaustively entered into. The meeting lasted four hours. Hiroki to be Executed. New Plymouth.—The gallows to hang Hiroki on is being erected in the; gaol. Application has been made to the gaoler for a copy of Hiroki’s confession, but it was refused by order of the Government. Hiroki will be hung; on Thursday morning. THE WAKANUI ELECTION. Ashburton.—The Wakanui election is creating considerable interest. Mr Ivess has been addressing large meet-' ings throughout the district, and hasi received unanimous votes of confidence in almost every place. The nomination takes place on Saturday. The roll contains the names of nearly 1800 electors.
MEAT FREEZING IN N;Z.
CARGO FROM DUNEDIN.
Dunedin.~The New Zealand Refrigerating Company here made an offer by telegram about a week ago to the Australian Company of London to supply to the latter company a cargo of
mtftton to be shipped at Port Chalmers in September at a price satisfactory to producers. Mr A. C. Begg, through whom the sale has been effected, has received a telegram from the company accepting the offer, and unkertaking to despatch a steamer for for the cargo. The cargo will consist of 7000 to 10,000 carcases, and will be frozen at the refrigerating company’s works, and - delivered frozen to the vessel at Port Chalmers. Market Place on Fire. Auckland.—A fire at the City Market has done damage to the extent of £620. Stealing Game. Auckland.—A large number of mountain quail and prairie hens have been stolen from the Acclimatisation Gardens. Telephone Exchange. The Auckland Telephone Exchange now has 82 subscribers.
