'Mr Pyke moved the second reading, and'.said the bill provides for denominational schools getting State aid by complying with examination tests A The: bill is intended" to relieve Catholics from a disability. j After the usual arjournment, Mr Joyce supported and Mr Fultdn opposed the Bill, although he advocated Bible-reading in schools. Mr Shrimski strongly opposed the Bill as tending to perpetrate religious differences. Mr Petrie strongly opposed the Bill, and said that on the West Goast Catholics largely availed themselves of State schools. Mr Turnbull spoke warmly , in support of Bill, and declared •it would be introduced year after year, and be supported by increased numbers until at last it would command a majority. Mr Dick said he would endeavor to carry out the present system fairly and properly, bat hoped the .time would come when’ the Bible will be allowed in Schools. He would however, give this up. rather than agree to such a bill as the present one. The House divided on the second read* ing : ayes 26, noes 47.
